Definition: Envy is being sad over someone else’s success and happy over someone else’s failures.

Four ugly facts about envy:

  • Envy damages our self-esteem
    • Two ways we camouflage self-esteem problems:
      • By giving false praise
      • Condescending comparisons
  • Envy creates a lack of contentment
    • Are you so concerned about what you don’t have that it keeps you from being thankful for what you do have?
  • Envy keeps us from enjoying the successes of others
  • Envy denies the goodness of God

Four things we can do to rid ourselves of envy

  • Learn to admire without having to acquire
  • Develop an attitude of gratitude
  • Anticipate envy
  • Most importantly, practice pursuing God
