Main Idea
Bad words last, but good words last too.

Starter
We have all been hurt by words, yet we still hear the saying “sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” Why do you think this saying is so common even though it isn’t true?

Discuss
James 3:5 says “The tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.”

Can you remember a time when someone said something to you and you just exploded because there was already a forest there and they just dropped the match?

What does the Bible say?
Read Psalm 39:1 and Psalm 141:3.

This weekend, we heard about five ways that our words can bring death:

  • Lying
  • Stirring up conflict
  • Gossip
  • Slander
  • Contentious speech

In which of these areas could you use a guard over your mouth? How is that an area of struggle for you?

Apply the message
We confess to God so that we can be forgiven. We confess to each other so that we can heal. How can we use confession this week to help us become more like Christ in the way we use and respond to words?
